I find that some of the best learning experiences, and even paintings, can come from when you give up on trying to ‘get it right’.
I was working on a series of paintings in October. I had not picked up the brush for a little while, so I was very careful with every single brush stroke. It wasn’t working. Everything I did came out looking worse. In my frustration I decided this one was beyond help. Freedom can come at the most unexpected times! Once I figured there was no saving it, I just started playing and mucking and lost interest in the outcome. My painting became looser and, in the end, more interesting. What I thought was going to be a toss, ended up being one of my favourites for the week’s work.
Buddhists say that peace is achieved when one detaches from the outcome. This is no less true for the artist seeking the heights of creativity.
