A friend and client is very well read on the Plains Indians of the American West, particularly the Nez Perce Tribe of Oregon and Idaho. Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce was a remarkable and tragic leader, warrior and peacemaker. Noted photographer Edward Curtis took a photo of Chief Joseph in 1903. It was this photo I used as a reference to bring Chief Joseph to life in colour and in paint. My friend considers Chief Joseph one of his favourite historic figures and the painting was a surprise gift from his wife.
I am excited to be able to finally take commissions now that I am a permanent resident, and this was a fun and interesting way to reboot as a working artist.
Fantastic, on all fronts!
Wishing you a most wonderful holiday season!
Thanks, Kinsey! All the best to you too!
Very nicely done.

Thanks. There is a challenge working from a black and white photo and no references from life.
This look great 🙂 love the pictoglyphs in the background
Thanks! Ha! You saw those…. 🙂
I viewed the piece on iPhone and I did not see the pictoglyphs. I zoomed in – nicely done…
Thanks!
